SUMMARY:Branch Meeting (Online) to discuss industrial action ballot results
DESCRIPTION:Kingston UCU branch meeting to discuss the results of the Four Fights ballot on industrial action over pay deflation\, pay inequality\, unsafe workloads and casualisation. \nThis meeting will take place on Zoom – members have been emailed an invite. If you haven’t received one\, please Contact Us. \nWith a turnout of 60%\, and 70% voting in favour of strike action and 92% in favour of action short of a strike\, we have passed the minimum legal threshold and have a mandate for action. We need to discuss what form nationally coordinated action should take\, and whether there should be a new aggregated ballot of all branches in the spring – our feedback will be taken to a delegates meeting before the Higher Education Committee meets on Friday 12th November.

SUMMARY:UCU Solidarity Movement campaign rally
DESCRIPTION:Launch the Fightback Across Post-16 Education\nCampaign rally organised by the UCU Solidarity Movement \n6:30pm Thursday 1st July \nThe fight against job cuts at Liverpool and Leicester universities has reached a crucial stage. After recent strikes\, members of both branches are now taking part in marking and assessment boycotts as part of their campaigns. Management at Liverpool have announced that they are imposing 100% pay docking on all staff who participate. \nMeanwhile\, there is now a real prospect of a fightback that can unite the entire union membership in defending the whole post-16 education sector. \nStrike ballots over pay and conditions in 20 FE colleges are ongoing. And the decisions from Congress and sector conferences mean that universities are relaunching the Four Fights dispute and preparing for a fight in defence of USS pensions. \nOn 2nd July\, the HE Committee will discuss how to implement this mandate. UCU’s policy is to launch industrial action ballots across pre- and post-92 HE as well as FE\, at a time when members in prisons and in Adult Community Education are standing up against cuts. \nWe are on the verge of a potential co-ordinated struggle for the future of the post-16 sector\, in which we can lead the trade union movement to defend education. We now need to organise to ensure we can deliver united cross-sectoral action. \nThe UCU Solidarity Movement has therefore called a rally on Thursday 1st July to highlight these issues and other initiatives such as the campaign to Defend the Arts\, as well as providing an opportunity for UCU branches to build solidarity for local disputes. \nSpeakers include: \n\n\nVicky Blake – UCU President \n\n\nAnt O’Hanlon – University of Liverpool UCU \n\n\nDeepa Driver – USS Pensions Negotiator \n\n\nJane Inskip – Vice Chair of Novus branch – prison education \n\n\nRobyn Orfitelli – University of Sheffield UCU \n\n\nSean Vernell – UCU NEC and Vice Chair of the Further Education Committee \n\n\nTanveer Ahmed – Royal College of Art UCU \n\n\nDonny Gluckstein – EIS FELA – Scottish further education \n\n\nPlus speakers from Liverpool and Leicester UCU branches \n\n\nPlease circulate this notice among colleagues\, share the details on social media\, and ensure your branch is well represented at the rally. \n\n\nRegister for the rally here: \n\n\nShare the event on facebook: https://fb.me/e/ZUATnTpI

SUMMARY:Emergency Branch Meeting - Politics\, History\, Media & Communication\, and Film Cultures 'consultation' processes launched
DESCRIPTION:This Wednesday 28th 3-5pm\, you are invited to a Kingston UCU branch meeting to discuss recent management decisions affecting Politics\, History\, Media & Communication\, and Film Cultures. As of last week\, staff in each of these subject areas are currently in a 45 day consultation process – at the end of this process there is a serious risk of redundancies. There has been a failure by senior management to consult here which your branch regards as a breach of  our trade union Recognition Agreement with the university and the Managing Organisational Restructures Procedure. \nThe purpose of this meeting will primarily be to discuss our collective response to these decisions. \nThis meeting will take place on Zoom – members have been emailed a calendar invite. If you haven’t received one\, please Contact Us. \nWe hope you can make it. Please do not worry if you are only able to attend some of the meeting – we know it is a busy time for everyone.

SUMMARY:Extraordinary Branch Meeting (Online)
DESCRIPTION:We are arranging an extraordinary meeting of the KU UCU branch to propose a motion relating to the University’s plans regarding face to face teaching this teaching block this Friday 28/08 at 1pm. At this meeting\, we will be proposing and voting on the following motion. \nThis branch notes that Independent Sage have released a Consultation Statement on Universities\, urging British universities to pursue online teaching as the ‘default option’ and avoid face-to-face teaching where possible. \nWe further note their recommendations of regular testing for all students and staff\, that masks should be worn in any face-to-face teaching\, and that universities should work with students to agree a contract committing everybody to act responsibly on and off campus. \nThis branch believes that teaching in Teaching Block 1 of the academic year 2020/21 should be online as far as possible\, rather than having a 30% minimum face-to-face teaching imposed across the board. We recognise that there are course-specific circumstances where not all teaching can feasibly be done online. Where this is the case (as determined by local Course Teams)\, face-to-face teaching must be undertaken on a fully voluntary basis with guarantees that those who do not opt to teach face-to-face will not suffer any financial or career detriment. Coercion of individuals by line managers to attempt to force returns to on campus working should be prohibited by the university. \nThis branch further believes that: \n\n\n\nBoth staff and students should be tested on return to campus\, and have regular follow up testing\,\nMasks should be required for any face-to-face classroom teaching\,\nA ‘conduct charter’ should be drawn up in consultation with UKS\n\n\n\nPlease do join us to discuss this important issue if at all possible. If this motion is passed\, we will be able to present it to JNCC and it will need to be considered by management. \nPlease check your inboxes for the Zoom link and remember to ensure that your full name is visible when you join the meeting.

SUMMARY:KSA UCU members meeting on Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Across the UCU membership at Kingston there have been some really positive suggestions proposed regarding how as staff we can work to share ideas and put these forward to university management to further develop anti-racist policies. As one of the University’s recognised trade unions\, we are motivated to support change and in a position to put forward concrete ideas for action. \nKSA UCU reps thought this could be a good time to get together members in our faculty to share thoughts and possible actions – so we’ve  put in place an online meeting on Tuesday 30th June 4.15pm – 5.15pm* on Zoom (come for as long as you can) \nPlease email us for the Zoom link: \n\nContact Maggie m.gray@kingston.ac.uk\nLucy lucy.parker@kingston.ac.uk\n\nSome of the areas we could discuss are: recruitment processes\, pay & promotion\, health & wellbeing\, harassment & discrimination\, political education & training\, security & surveillance\, partnerships & funding\, marketing\, working with Unison and UKS\, improving Equalities representation in the branch.\n \nWe also have the following motion (a proposal voted on\, which would go to the wider branch\, and into consultations with management) to discuss: Postgraduate students on Tier-4 visas \nWe welcome member suggestions for other agenda items. If you are not able to attend\, please do contact Lucy and Maggie with suggestions and input – we are happy to talk to members on a 1-1 basis too. \nIt’s Your union! As a democratic organisation\, the more people that get involved the stronger and more representative we are. \nHope to see you online! \n  \nUCU centrally have a lot of useful resources: \n\nA short guide for branches can be accessed here https://www.ucu.org.uk/equality.\nAlso UCU have produced a short film about how everyday racism manifests itself in the workplace https://www.ucu.org.uk/action-against-workplace-racism’\n\n  \n* This start time for this event was originally 4pm start but was moved back due to coming right after   Festival of Research event ‘Navigating the world of academia when no one looks like you- the lecturers’ story’ \n
